Scientists at General Electric are taking inspiration from the tiny crevices of butterfly wings to create nanosensor technology that could detect weapons and explosives.
Three years ago GE scientists learned that the scales on butterfly wings have acute chemical-recognition abilities. The microscopic structure beneath the refractive colours on a butterfly’s wings interact with tiny traces of airborne chemicals.
